I wanted so much today to be able to ring Richard, that’s all, only to hear his voice and say, Next Friday, we will meet. Next Friday, it’s only five days away, well, you could call it six … He has my two telephone numbers, but I do not have his.

If I did have his home number – if it is not a hotel he is at, for he did say that his own home was let – who would I get, with Richard, presumably already departed up to Hull? Kathleen, that sombre presence? Should I say, oh, this is Jane Somers, you know, we have almost met so often.
